Well, that day is finally here! The site is live and there are a number of new features to help you with your job search. With the new Career Connector you can…

Search for jobs under multiple categories, which have been updated and expanded to include new job functions
Visit your dashboard to view a summary of your saved jobs, application history, and recommended jobs that may be of interest to you
Set up weekly, biweekly, or monthly email alerts for new jobs that are posted to categories that you specify
Upload resumes and cover letters in formats such as .doc and .pdf to send to employers with your application instead of entering plain text or copying and pasting

A Change Will Do You Good

Browsing through my bi-weekly email from Dewey & Kaye, I came across a great article written by one of their staff entitled “Personal Strategies for Coping with Workplace Change & Stress“. Who couldn’t use a few tips on this topic? But it seems especially relevant in today’s world of uncertainty where layoffs are the norm and workloads are shifting.

Employees are now expected to pick up the to-do lists of their laid off colleagues and there is more pressure to be as productive as possible and make yourself a known valuable asset to those passing out the pink slips. You’re worried. There’s your sister, your husband, your best friend – all looking for a way to pay the bills. Your company is reporting earnings well below what is needed for you to receive that bonus, but no matter; you want to kiss the ground each morning you wake up and realize that you are still employed. It’s this state of flux – of not know what will happen next, while readjusting to the new reality of a workplace - that makes us anxious. And I do truly believe what this article is telling us – that the action and optimistic attitude we embrace today will only lead us to success (not to mention a longer life) in the future.

It’s once again time for the bi-annual WestPACS job and career fair. Come down to the Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena to visit the PTC’s booth, and then check out the nearly 120 other employers that will be in attendance. The fair is on April 1st from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. If you haven’t registered, visit www.westpacs.org to sign up. Although the fair is planned for WestPACS Member Schools & their alumni, others are welcome to attend as walk-ins.

I could go on and on. Did I mention San Fransisco, Minneapolis (incidentally my hometown), Portland and Cleveland?

The latest data on jobs is in, and Pittsburgh continues to come out on top. In the middle of a frightening recession, it’s good to know that our region has seen one of the smallest changes across the country in the sheer number of jobs available. Pittsburgh’s Future outlines this quite well, with graphs and some analysis. Not surprisingly, one of the biggest sectors to see a decrease is in the retail industry. Who needs the latest in HD technology or a swank new outfit when you’re worried about paying the mortgage? But certainly, our growth in the Health Care and Education industries has been our life vest and will (hopefully) continue to keep us above water while the world’s economic turmoil continues.
